Cooking Up Science Fun!

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about solids, liquids and gases. Today we started talking about how heat can change the form of solids, liquids and gases. A great blog that I was inspired by for this lesson is Chalk Talk. She has a wealth of great information and resources for many early childhood activities.
One of the things April did to showcase how heat changes liquids to solids was making pancakes with the children. I decided to use this idea with my first grade science class today.

This is not my picture, but since I can't find mine at the moment, this is what we did last week. We went over this chart today to review the changes we may see.
I found this clipart and text FREE for our lesson thanks to Chalk Talk!

We discussed the ingredients needed when making pancakes and talked about which ones were solids or liquids by using the smartboard. We then predicted with our neighbors what may change when heat is applied or when we mix these ingredients.

We talked about the changes we could see from the moment the butter touched the griddle. Butter that was once was a solid, is now a liquid. The children even commented how the steam from the butter and pancakes were the gas. They especially were excited when they saw the bubbles form on the pancakes which soon turned into a solid.

Of course,  how could I forget-- we made chocolate chip pancakes!

If only you could see the kids faces! They were very excited. But unfortunately due to privacy, I am unable to show the kids on the blog.

After we ate our delicious pancakes, we completed a writing activity which was inspired by one of Chalk Talk's group activities, which I made for independent work. I made two different writing activities based upon abilities and left each one with an open ended response to see if anyone could elaborate by either drawing or writing.
