Moon Cookies!

As an extension of our study about the moon, we made moon cookies inspired by the Chalktalk blog.

First we read about the moon using BookFlix

We also asked questions about the moon by giving them the prompt.. I wonder.....
Then we wrote about our learning with these two options.

We then made moon cookies to enhance our learning and inspire and engage all learners! It also shows how well they can follow procedural text. They had to follow these directions. You can find the visuals HERE.

You can also get the assessment pieces of the moon writing I created for free HERE.

Enjoy!!

Learning about the Moon

In first grade we are learning about the moon. I used April's packet from ChalkTalk at teacherspayteachers. She has some useful ideas for learning about the moon. We started our study by learning about the phases of the moon. We began by watching a Brain Pop Jr. video about the moon. I read the section of moon phases in the book Moon by Gail Gibbons.

Then we discussed the phases of the moon and created them together. Some children were asked to label the phases, others were asked to write them down.

                                                   Enjoy!

What Animal Skin Are You In?

In Kindergarten we are working on animals. We recently learned about animal coverings and how all animals have different types. We started out by reading this simple book I made.

I have this for sale for $1.00 in my Teachers Pay Teachers if you would like to purchase it for your classroom.

Then we made a book from Kim Adsit's Science Blasters Animal -Wild and Tame Unit which can be purchased here. Visit her blog for more fabulous ideas!

You can see how some children are showcasing the different levels.
Here this child is at the first letter sound.

This child does very well with labeling, it may be beneficial to start encouraging
sentence structure to this child for next time.

This child is forming sentences.

Enjoy!

I'm giving away one of my What Skin Are You In? file!

Groove! Groove! How do Animals Move?

In Kindergarten science we are studying how do animals move. We started out by reading the book Move!

The children enjoyed it and really got them thinking about all the different ways animals move. We turned and talked to our partners to discuss what we learned.

Then we made a flamingo book inspired by Kim Adsit's Animals Wild and Tame Unit.

Here, we showed two different ways you were able to make the pages in your book. Sentence or sort.

Inside the book the children had to cut out clip art animal pictures given to the them and then glue in on one page all the animals that fly, the next page, animals that swim, and the last page, animals that walk. If they were more advanced, they had more pages in their book and had to glue one animal on each page and write a sentence about how it moved.

Enjoy!

What Do Babies Need?

Over in Kindergarten we are talking about why families are important? One of the standards requires to teach about the needs and wants of families. What a better way to showcase that then helping children understand what babies need? This post is inspired by the wonderful Kim Adsit and her Family Fun Unit.

We started out by talking about why families are important. Then we talked about babies and how families are important in taking care of babies. Which then segued us into our day's lesson which is learning about what babies need. I gave each pair of students pictures of things babies may need and asked them to turn and talk to have a discussion about these pictures with their partners. We began by using our inventive spelling to talk about things babies need. We made a list together.

Then the children made a "diaper" book of what babies need. I modified it by giving children who are at a higher level a few more pages to add to.

Some children were able to write the words and some children initiated on their own to use sentences to write in their books. Then the next day we reviewed our books and I showcased books that were exemplary. They then had to construct their own baby and attach their diaper book  their craft.

Checklist

Next to each baby is a checklist I made that the children could check off as they worked through each step. Many of the children work well with the checklist.

But anywho...how cute are these! Thanks Kim Adsit! The children loved them!
