What Do Babies Need?

Over in Kindergarten we are talking about why families are important? One of the standards requires to teach about the needs and wants of families. What a better way to showcase that then helping children understand what babies need? This post is inspired by the wonderful Kim Adsit and her Family Fun Unit.

We started out by talking about why families are important. Then we talked about babies and how families are important in taking care of babies. Which then segued us into our day's lesson which is learning about what babies need. I gave each pair of students pictures of things babies may need and asked them to turn and talk to have a discussion about these pictures with their partners. We began by using our inventive spelling to talk about things babies need. We made a list together.

Then the children made a "diaper" book of what babies need. I modified it by giving children who are at a higher level a few more pages to add to.

Some children were able to write the words and some children initiated on their own to use sentences to write in their books. Then the next day we reviewed our books and I showcased books that were exemplary. They then had to construct their own baby and attach their diaper book  their craft.

Checklist

Next to each baby is a checklist I made that the children could check off as they worked through each step. Many of the children work well with the checklist.

But anywho...how cute are these! Thanks Kim Adsit! The children loved them!
